Set of Eight French St. Clément French Basketweave & Rope Oyster Plates and Master Server Dish
A lovely set of eight French majolica glazed oyster plates complete with master server dish or platter from the faïencerie of St. Clément, circa 1890s. Each plate features six white scallop shell-shaped compartments against a rich blue-green basket weave background. The raised center lemon or mignonette well and the outer rim are surrounded by brown roping. The master server features 12 compartments for oysters and two center lemon, butter, or mignonette wells.
The faïence factory of St. Clément, near Lunéville, was established in 1758 by Jacques Chambrette. The factory was awarded the label as Royal Supplier for Marie Antoinette’s Trianon. In 1892, the factory was sold to Keller and Guérin, who already owned the earthenware factory of Lunéville.
