Vallauris Oyster Plates by Marius Giuge, Set of Six
Rare set of six French richly glazed majolica Vallauris oyster plates by Marius Giuge, circa 1950s. Handcrafted in the famous old pottery making village of Vallauris, located in the South of France, these classic Provençal design oyster plates with scalloped edges and six outer compartments for oysters and center lemon or mignonette well, are an excellent example of French majolica. The small scenic town of Vallauris became world famous when Picasso lived there in the 1940s and 1950s and majolica from Vallauris is celebrated for its beautiful glazes and extraordinary shapes. The deep eggplant base glaze of the plates is overlaid with a lovely white foam and dark and light purple swirls, with a dark blue rope edge around the central lemon well and the edge of plates. Marked "Marius Giuge Artisan Potier Vallauris on the back.
