Pair of 19th Century French Framed Oil Hunting Dog Portraits, Signed Louis Lartigau
A stunning pair of 19th century original oil on canvas paintings by French artist Louis Lartigau, depicting Brittany Spaniels in the field with their trophies in mouth, one having retrieved a colorful pheasant and the other a large wild hare. Presented in the original matching carved giltwood frames, both paintings feature a rich color palette and loose brush strokes with a soft diffusion of light. The artist's use of light in this painting is superb and his skill in rendering the details of the dogs' expressions and the fur and feathers brings a heightened sense of reality to these beautiful paintings. Lartigau, an impressionist artist, made a specialty of hunting scenes, and particularly hounds and pointing dogs. Signed in lower right corner.
