19th Century French Black Forest Hand Carved Wooden Buck Head Trophy Plaque
A fantastic antique French Black Forest carved wooden trophy plaque depicting an intricately hand carved solid walnut six point buck or stag head with carved antlers mounted on a carved cartouche or shield, circa 1890s. The quality of execution and details of the deer's serious expression along with the finesse of his coat and the symmetrical presence of his ears and antlers are wonderfully executed and bring so much life to this carved Black Forest buck. Another great example of the master artisanry of the region, this popular subject with its wonderful dark patina will bring a touch of rustic authenticity to any decor.
The Black Forest is actually located in a triangular area that borders Germany, France, and Switzerland and it extends along the Rhine River. Wood carving has been a traditional cottage industry in the region since the beginning of the 1800s. Black Forest carvings became a symbol of luxury and wealth in Europe.
