19th Century French Louis Philippe Period Bookmatched Front Four-Drawer Commode with Marble Top
An exceptional 19th century French Louis Philippe period commode handcrafted of walnut by talented artisans in Provence near Avignon, circa 1830s, having the original white Carrara marble top with rounded corners resting above the typical hidden period doucine drawer. Three main drawers below feature a beautiful and rare butterfly bookmatched walnut front for an exotic natural look. Pulls were not typically used in this period so only a key was left in the centered lock to use as an aid when opening the drawer. Drawers have working locks and keyholes ornamented with original lozenge shaped brass escutcheons and iron keys. Raised on shaped pistolet feet.
Clean, straight lines are one of the signature features of the Louis Philippe style, and this fine antique French chest of drawers is a wonderful example. Although the elaborate and carved elements of past French styles were abandoned during the Louis Philippe period, the craftsmanship was still superb. It just avoided the lavish excesses of previous styles. The strong, bold lines and subtle curves of Louis Philippe pieces mix easily with modern or traditional decor making them one of the most popular choices in an existing home. The scale of the drawers ensures an ample amount of storage wherever this chest is placed.
