19th Century French Louis Philippe Style Bleached Walnut Commode with Marble Top and Bookmatched Front
A handsome 19th century French Louis Philippe style four-drawer bleached commode handcrafted of walnut with a meticulously bookmatched burled walnut front by skilled artisans in the South of France near Avignon, circa 1880s. This striking commode features the original dark gray Saint Anne marble top with an ogee edge and canted corners that overhangs the body to balance the proportion of the plinth base and sabot feet while placing an emphasis on the geometric quality of the style created during the reign of King Louis Philippe (1830-1848). The four drawers each have a center brass escutcheon and locking key. Although the elaborate and carved elements of past French styles were abandoned during the Louis Philippe period, the craftsmanship was still superb. It just avoided the lavish excesses of previous styles. The strong, bold lines and subtle curves of Louis Philippe pieces mix easily with other styles making them an easy fit in an existing home. The scale of the drawers ensures an ample amount of storage wherever this chest is placed.
