Large 19th Century French Cruche or Water Pitcher with Yellow Ochre Glaze
A large 19th century French cruche from Provence having an yellow ochre glaze with two handles and spout, circa 1870s. Traditionally used to keep cold water in the house or in the fields, these French pitchers were only half glazed as they would have been stored in the ground to cool the water. The beautiful warm patina of this large antique water pitcher developed over the passage of time and with the help of the hot Provençal sun. The imperfections are a testament to its utilitarian history and frequent use. A classic French piece that's beautifully decorative, this 19th century cruche will add a bit of French Country charm wherever it's used. We have a large selection of antique French pottery.
