- 19th Century French Period Louis Philippe Walnut and Fruitwood Parquetry Commode with Bookmatched Front
19th Century French Period Louis Philippe Walnut and Fruitwood Parquetry Commode with Bookmatched Front
An exceptional 19th century French Louis Philippe period commode, circa 1840s, handcrafted in Lyon of walnut and fruitwood parquetry with a bookmatched front. This fine chest of drawers features a hidden doucine top drawer and three drawers below, all with original gilt-bronze hardware, the escutions being diamond shaped inlay surrounding the locks. Raised on four shaped pistolet feet. Although the elaborate and carved elements of past French styles were abandoned during the Louis Philippe period, the craftsmanship was still superb. It just avoided the lavish excesses of previous styles. Furniture makers selected woods that accentuated the fluidity of the lines. These strong, bold lines and subtle curves of Louis Philippe pieces mix easily with other styles, making them an easy fit in an existing home. The scale of the drawers in this beautiful commode ensures an ample amount of storage wherever this chest is placed.
