19th Century French Louis Philippe Period Walnut Commode with Bookmatched Burled Walnut Front
19th century French Louis Philippe period commode, circa 1840s, handcrafted in the Île de France region of walnut with a bookmatched burled walnut front. This fine chest of drawers, having a warm and rich patina throughout, features a hidden top drawer and three drawers below, all with original gilt-bronze handles, escutcheons, and lockwork. Resting on shaped pistolet feet. Although the elaborate and carved elements of past French styles were abandoned during the Louis Philippe period, the craftsmanship was still superb. It just avoided the lavish excesses of previous styles. The strong, bold lines and subtle curves of Louis Philippe pieces mix easily with other styles making them an easy fit in an existing home. The scale of the drawers ensures an ample amount of storage wherever this chest is placed.
