18th Century Painted French Louis XVI Period Commode or Chest of Drawers
A superb 18th century period French Louis XVI painted wooden commode or chest of drawers handcrafted by skilled craftsmen in Provence, having a wonderfully distressed pale aqua painted finish, circa 1780s. This three-drawer commode features a slightly overhanging top with cookie cutter corners sitting above a case of three full-sized drawers having original circular brass handles and escutcheons. Supported on curved and fluted stiles sitting on turned toupie feet. Commodes like this were essential to the period, as closets were still considered a luxury of the highest order, and were not moveable like small pieces of furniture The scale of the drawers ensures an ample amount of storage wherever this chest is placed and its beautifully distressed finish along with the pure clean lines complement both contemporary and traditional interiors. An elegant yet unpretentious choice for any home, from a bedroom to a living room.
