18th Century Louis XV-Louis XVI Transition Period Solid Cherry Enfilade Buffet
An 18th century Louis XV-Louis XVI Transition period solid cherry enfilade buffet handcrafted by skilled artisans from Saint-Nazaire in the Brittany region during the French Transition period (1750-1775), having four drawers over four doors that open to reveal plenty of storage. The shaped, carved apron and short cabriole legs of this enfilade feature timeless Louis XV inspired elements, in contrast with the carving on the drawers and the carved ribbons and bows flanking the doors, which are typical Louis XVI period motifs. The narrow depth of this versatile piece makes it perfect for a foyer, hallway, dining room, or as a TV cabinet.
Most Transition period pieces were created outside Paris by Provincial cabinet makers and combined design elements used during Louis XV's reign (1723-1774) with Louis XVI (1774-1792) motifs in the same piece. When Louis XVI assumed the throne in 1774 after his father's death, Rococo tendencies and Baroque excess were no longer popular. A movement was underway that favored the clean, straight lines of the neoclassical style.
