19th Century French Louis XVI Style Painted and Parcel Gilt Duchesse Brisee Chaise Lounge
19th century French Louis XVI style painted and parcel gilt walnut duchesse brisée or chaise lounge having typical neoclassical elements and raised on turned toupie feet, retaining the original painted and parcel gilt finish, circa 1880s. The name literally means "broken duchess," a term for a chaise lounge with a separate ottoman or footstool. This very distinctive form, usually referred to as a chaise or lounge chair is difficult to find. Divided into three parts consisting of "His" chair, "Her" chair, and a center ottoman for both, it's intended for use as a chaise longue with a His and Hers" setup. It can also be arranged with one chair conjoined with the ottoman as a lounging chair and the other chair placed elsewhere in the home. The chairs and ottoman are structurally sound and sit very comfortably. The floral, striped silk fabric has stains and tears.
