A 20th century French Louis XVI style rafraîchissoir or servante hand crafted of mahogany near Paris, circa early-1900s. This elegant refreshment table has a rectangular gray marble top with a pierced brass gallery that is fitted with two silver plated receptacles to chill wine or champagne bottles. The frieze with a single drawer to one end has ebony inlays. Raised on square tapering legs with brass collars and brass sabots that are joined by a shelf stretcher.
The purpose of the rafraîchissoir was to allow a host and his guests privacy during dinner by providing all the needed items for the duration of the dinner. Without the prying eyes and ears of servants, they were able to dine alone — keeping waiters or other staff from overhearing private conversations. Bottles of wine or champagne would chill in the wells that contained removable metal buckets inset in the top of the table. These buckets were usually silver plated or brass. The remaining area of the table top was usually covered with a marble surface. The drawer below was used to store things like corkscrews, cutlery, and extra napkins. Most rafraîchissoirs also had one or sometimes tiered shelves below to hold covered dishes or extra plates for later courses.
Dimensions:
h - 27"
w - 27.25"
d - 17"
