A fine 19th century wax bust of Hungarian composer Franz Liszt by French sculptor Paul Gaston Déprez, circa 1890s. This rare wax sculpture features a beautiful, lifelike facial expression and fine detail all around. Signed "G.Deprez on the right shoulder. Presented on a walnut base. Excellent condition.
Paul Gaston Déprez was a French sculptor during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Born to a well to do family on March 21st, 1872 in Avignon. He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1890 where he developed a passion for sculpture. His favorite materials were wax, plaster and bronze. In 1892, Déprez began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français. He lived on Boulevard Raspail in Avignon all his life, where he created many waxworks to produce bronzes. Following the decision by the president of the Société Vauclusienne des Amis des Arts to expel certain artistic domains from its exhibitions in 1912, Déprez joined the Group of thhirteen founded by Clément Brun, where he worked with artists from Avignon like the painter Joseph Meissonnier and the sculptor Jean-Pierre Gras. He died in 1941, leaving numerous wax works like the famous “Altaïr” or the Beethoven portrait reissued by his wife Gabrielle Decohorne after his death.
