French Louis Philippe Period Walnut Commode with Bookmatch Front and Marble Top
Striking French Louis Philippe period commode handcrafted of walnut by talented artisans in Lyon, having a bookmatched walnut front and marble top, circa 1840s. The white carrara marble top rests above a doucine apron drawer with three drawers below, each having round gilt-brass drawer pulls and escutcheons. The whole rests on shaped pistolet feet. This handsome commode has a beautiful rich color and patina. Although the elaborate and carved elements of past French styles were abandoned during the Louis Philippe period, the craftsmanship was still superb. It just avoided the lavish excesses of previous styles. The strong, bold lines and subtle curves of Louis Philippe pieces mix easily with other styles making them an easy fit in an existing home.
