19th Century French Etabli or Capenter's Workbench with Two Vises
19th century French etabli or carpenter's workbench hand constructed of pine and chestnut in the South of France near Uzés, having a top that is almost five inches thick, trestle legs, and a bottom shelf. The surface of this rustic carpenter's workbench has tool holes built into the thick wood slab top, tool marks and indentations from the many projects completed over decades of use, and a great patina. It features 2 original steel vises, a large storage drawer (added at a later date), a recessed tray for holding a craftsman's tools and implements, and traditional tenon and mortise construction. Workbenches like this were common in country homes in France. Farmers were not able to work in the fields during the cold winter months so they would often make furniture for their own homes or families. Whether used as a console, sofa table, or bar, this sturdy workbench will withstand everyday use with ease and is sure to be a focal point.
