Louis Philippe Period Cherry Commode with Four Drawers
French Louis Philippe period cherry commode, circa 1840s, having a long doucine drawer with three fitted drawers below, resting upon pistolet feet. Each drawer has a brass escutcheon that identifies the keyhole. Not only decorative, the escutcheons protect the wood from the key when it is inserted into the lock. This handsome commode, handcrafted by skilled artisans in the South of France, retains its beautiful, rich color and patina, and has a fresh French polish.
Although the elaborate and carved elements of past French styles were abandoned during the Louis Philippe period, the craftsmanship was still superb. It just avoided the pomp and lavish excesses of previous styles. The strong, bold lines and subtle curves of Louis Philippe pieces make them an easy fit into an existing home. They mix with other periods and styles flawlessly.
