19th Century French Country Louis XV Style Bressan Enfilade Buffet
19th Century French Country Louis XV style enfilade buffet handcrafted of walnut and burled walnut in the typical technique mastered by the skilled artisans of Bresse, circa 1880s.This beautiful provincial buffet features an inset walnut top above three carved drawers having iron drop handles. The three moulded, paneled doors in walnut with burled walnut panels are separated by elaborately carved stiles featuring floral and foliate motifs carved in bas relief. The carved, shaped apron rests on short cabriole legs ending in scrolled French toes.
The country cabinetmakers of Bresse produced characteristic furniture in the Louis XV style, using contrasting woods. The Bresse region, with its reputation for rich traditional cuisine, produced more buffets and vaisseliers than armoires. The buffet or enfilade was considered an essential furnishing for any self-respecting home. Able to store a family's china, silverware, and linens while providing a generous serving surface, it was indispensable in the dining room. Today, these versatile buffets can be used in most any room.
