Aux Anysetiers du Roy's Herbes de Provence or Provençal Herbs is a traditional blend of aromatic herbs that flourish in hills of southern France during the hot summer months. A blend of thyme, savory, basil, fennel, and lavender flowers, Herbs de Provence is a great addition to virtually any Mediterranean dish, including lamb, beef, chicken, fish, roasted vegetables, salads or even pizza sauce. Season some lightly oiled baguettes for a unique side. The cute stoneware crock, made in a small village in the Drôme near Valence, will quickly find a place on your counter or spice rack
Aux Anysetiers du Roy began as a popular restaurant located on Paris’s Ile Saint Louis, near Notre Dame in the 1960s. The restaurant specialized in Provençal cooking, using olive oil, garlic, and aromatic herbs. At the end of dinner, each customer received a gift pot filled with a special herbs de Provence blend prepared by Louis Lombard, who was the first to include lavender flowers in the aromatic herbs. The success of the little crock gave his sons the idea to produce a line of items packed in clay and stoneware pots. The Lombards now create their own recipes of special blends of aromatic herbs and spices, and a variety of chocolate fondues. Loose herbs are wrapped in plastic to ensure freshness and each crock is packed by hand, ensuring the quality of each individual product.

Thyme, Basil, Savory, Fennel Seeds, Lavender Flowers

A stunning 19th century French pot de confit or confit pot from southwest France having two handles and a rare dark green glaze on the outside with a yellow glaze inside the pot, circa 1880s. Utilitarian earthenware vessels like this one were a staple in French kitchens, especially in the South of France where the weather was warmer. The word confit means “to preserve" and these charming pots made it possible for country cooks to slowly cook the duck or goose and and preserve the meat in its own fat. French confit pots are easily recognizable because of their beautiful glazed upper sections and often unglazed bottoms. The bottom half of the pot was usually, but not always, left unglazed because it would be buried in the cool soil of the cellar or placed in a stone lined larder up to the glazing line. This storage process preserved the cooked meat without refrigeration so it could then be enjoyed throughout the winter months.
The luminous green glaze of this antique pot has aged with character and developed a lovely patina. The imperfections and chips help authenticate confit pots and only add to the charm. Of all the antique confit pots, those having a green glaze are the most rare to find, making them highly collectible and amongst the most collected antiques from France. These quintessentially French pots are now considered country classics, adding authentic French provincial style to your home. Used for decorative purposes today, they can hold utensils in the kitchen, flowers or herbs, or simply be grouped together for display on a shelf or counter in your kitchen. Truly an exceptional find. We have a large selection of antique French pottery. Contact us for more pictures or information.

A beautiful and decorative collection of nine early 20th century Italian herbiers framed in a large painted white nine-pane window frame. Each catalogued by hand with the Latin or botanical name of the plant, the date, catalog number, and "Firenze" (Florence, Italy). The dates are between 1903 and 1907.
The oldest traditions of making herbarium collections (dried flowers, herbs, leaves, grasses, and other plants mounted on paper) have been traced to Italy, with the oldest herbarium still in existence being that of Gherardo Cibo from around 1532. French botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) is credited with first applying the term herbarium to a collection of dried, pressed plants. The Italian botanist and physician, Luca Ghini (1490–1556) reintroduced the study of actual plants as opposed to relying on classical texts, which lacked sufficient accuracy for identification. In the late 19th century and into the early 20th, collecting herbier specimens was a popular pastime for affluent Europeans. These collectors would spend a great deal of time drying, pressing, mounting and labeling the plants they found on their travels around the world.

A large 19th century Spanish terracotta orza or olive jar handmade in the province of Tarragona in the Catalonia region, circa 1880s, having four handles and an unglazed exterior with the neck, rim, and interior having a beautiful green glaze and green and ochre drips on thee outside. Used to preserve olive oil, this antique earthenware preserving pot has a rich patina with wonderful character that only years of use and the weather can create. The areas where the glaze has dripped onto the body of the vessel only adds to its unique patina.
