Beautiful Country French vaisselier handcrafted of walnut and burled walnut in the typical technique mastered by the artisans of Bresse. Circa 1850s. Upper section with open plate racks and two cabinets with a lovely longcase clock in the center, above the lower buffet section with three drawers over three doors. Shaped apron resting on short cabriole legs. All of the ornamentation is completely hand carved and includes shells, c and s-scrolls, florets and scrolling foliage.
The country cabinetmakers of Bresse produced characteristic furniture in the Louis XV style, using two tones of wood. The Bresse region, with its reputation for rich traditional cuisine, produced more buffets and vaisseliers than armoires. Often tall, with a clock positioned under the cornice, the Bressan vaisseliers were designed to dominate a room and provide all the features needed to store dishes, serving pieces, flatware, cutlery and glassware in one piece.
