Item # LFALO950
Handsome Louis XVI style bouillotte table in mahogany with a Carrara marble top surrounded by a pierced brass gallery. The apron has two drawers for cards and chips and two tirettes (pull-out utility slides) with embossed leather tops that were originally used to place candles on for lighting. Raised on tapered, fluted legs ending in brass sabots.
This is a classic example of a Louis XVI style bouillotte table inspired by the gambling card game of the same name. Bouillotte was so popular in France during the 18th century that both a special table and lamp were created for play. Bouillotte is said to be one of the card games that led to the development of poker. Chips were used as wagers during the game and the raised gallery helped keep the playing pieces on the table.
