Very fine antique French Louis Philippe period buffet deux corps handcrafted of cherrywood by skilled artisans of Mont Saint-Michel, an island commune in Normandy. Circa 1830s. This handsome piece accentuates the simple style that characterizes all Louis Philippe pieces, featuring a moulded doucine crown atop an upper cabinet sitting above a lower buffet fitted with three drawers over two doors. Resting on baluster feet.
This large buffet deux corps is less ornate than previous French styles, but is still elegant in an unpretentious fashion. The style is simple, with softly rounded lines. Louis Philippe period antique furniture was devised for a busy but coddled bourgeoisie. It sought to satisfy their desire for comfort and to give them a sense of social legitimacy. Although the elaborate and carved elements of past French styles were abandoned during the Louis Philippe period, the craftsmanship was still superb. It just avoided the pomp and lavish excesses of previous styles. Dimensions:
