Item # LFA065 Louis XIII buffet de chasse (hunting buffet). Circa 1870s. Solid oak. Two carved drawers above two doors with bas relief carvings of birds. The two meticulously detailed birds, surrounded by cattails and leaves, were done by an expert ébéniste. The doors are flanked by fluted balusters and rest on two front bun feet and two back block feet. From a hunting lodge in Normandy.
Buffet de chasse were found in French hunting lodges and were used to present game after the hunt. Various forms of the hunt were depicted in the furniture, tapestries and paintings over the centuries.
