Antique French Louis XVI style Bergère à Oreilles, circa 1880, in original paint featuring wonderful hand carved neoclassical details carved into the frame with upholstered back, arms, seat, and loose down cushion. Curved wingbacks terminating into padded armrests, all raised on four elegant circular tapered fluted legs below richly carved rosette blocks. Very sturdy and comfortable seating. Chair is in excellent structural condition, but needs to be reupholstered.

The beauty of this large scale armchair, originally designed to shield the face from fireplace heat or from drafts, lies in its elegant proportion between balance of scale and symmetry of design that are hallmarks of superior design achieved during the reign of King Louis XVI.
