Item # LFALO1733
Lovely 18th century painted commode in original color with a very good patinated surface handcrafted by talented artisans in the South of France during the French Transition period (1750-1775). Rectangular conforming wooden top above three drawers with original hardware. Carved, shaped apron, all resting on short cabriole legs.
Most Transition period pieces were created outside Paris by Provincial cabinet makers and combined design elements used during the reign of Louis XV (1723-1774) with Louis XVI (1774-1792) motifs in the same piece. When Louis XVI assumed the throne in 1774 after his father's death, Rococo tendencies and Baroque excess were no longer popular. A movement was underway that favored the clean, straight lines of the neoclassical style. Louis XV inspired motifs include the carved, shaped apron and the short, raised cabriole legs of this commode, in contrast with the curved and fluted stiles which are typical of Louis XVI pieces. The wonderful distressed patina achieved from centuries of use enhances the overall desirability of this antique French Provençal commode. The scale of the drawers ensures an ample amount of storage wherever this chest is placed. Dimensions:
