Item # LFALO1840
A monumental 18th century bleached walnut chateau buffet deux corps, handcrafted by talented artisans from Aix en Provence during the French Transition period (1750-1775). Most Transition period pieces were created outside Paris by provincial cabinet makers combining design elements used during the reign of Louis XV (1723-1774) with Louis XVI (1774-1792) motifs in the same piece. Rococo tendencies and Baroque excess were no longer en vogue when Louis XVI assumed the throne in 1774 after his father's death. A new movement was underway that favoured the clean, straight lines of the neoclassical style.
This exceptional eight-door cabinet features molded, panelled doors with carved C-scrolls ending in volutes, and sides with raised and recessed panels that represent timeless Louis XV inspired motifs, in contrast with the fluted, columnar lines of the centre stile, the carved friezes with rows of fluted molding and the short tapered, fluted legs that are all typical Louis XVI period elements. The four upper cabinet doors open wide to reveal plenty of storage with two interior shelves and the four lower cabinet doors open to reveal a single shelf. This impressive French cabinet has stood the test of time and boasts a beautiful patina. The narrow depth makes it a very versatile and functional piece. Dimensions:
