18th century Louis XIV style buffet d'appui (tall buffet) from the Normandie region of France. Circa late 1700s. This handsome gentleman's buffet is handcrafted of solid wild cherrywood and features a single drawer over a center panel with rounded edges and intricately carved florets, arabesques, acanthus leaves and scrolls, flanked by a single door on each side with raised and recessed panels carved with florets, foliate and acorn motifs. The doors open to reveal an interior shelf. Raised on block feet.
Gentleman buffets like this were taller so that men could lean upon them as they had a drink. Literally, "tall buffet."
