Exceptional mid-18th century French Louis XV period commode de galbée handcrafted of chestnut with burled chestnut and fruitwood parquetry by master artisans near Marseilles. Curved front having three drawers with gilt-bronze lockwork, escutcheons and drawer pulls. The corners are rounded with a carved panel over a protruding shaped knee. Shaped apron with scrolled carvings rests on short cabriole legs ending in scrolled French toes on pegs. The lovely patina of the hand waxed finish gives the aged wood an enchanting luster and enhances the overall desirability of this piece. During the 18th century, the French often considered the commode to be the prime piece of furniture in the chateau. It was often placed as a showpiece in the main room of the chateau.
