Item # LFALO2601
An exceptional 18th century commode handcrafted from select French walnut by master artisans near the Lyon region during the French Transition period (1750-1775), having a rectangular top with canted front corners sitting above two drawers with shaped, raised panel moldings featuring typical Louis XV "S" scroll motifs surrounding the highly chased, bronze doré lockwork, drawer pulls, and escutcheons. Shaped apron with scrolled carvings rests on short tapered legs which are typical of the Louis XVI period. The scale of the drawers ensures an ample amount of storage wherever this chest is placed.
Most Transition period pieces were created outside Paris by provincial cabinet makers and combined design elements used during the reign of Louis XV (1723-1774) with Louis XVI (1774-1792) motifs in the same piece. When Louis XVI assumed the throne in 1774 after his father's death, Rococo tendencies and Baroque excess were no longer popular. A movement was underway that favored the clean, straight lines of the neoclassical style. An authentic and historic example of 18th century hand crafted artisanry with fine details and coloration. The lovely patina of the hand waxed finish gives the walnut an enchanting luster and enhances the overall desirability of this antique French Provincial commode. During the 18th century, the French often considered the commode to be the prime piece of furniture in the chateau. It was often placed as a showpiece in the main room of the chateau. The scale of the drawers ensures an ample amount of storage wherever this chest is placed. Dimensions:
