Late 18th Century Country French Chestnut Pantry or Work Table
A late 18th century Country French pantry table or work table handcrafted of solid chestnut by artisans near Guérande, a medieval city in Brittany famed for its nearby salt marshes, circa 1790s. Having a rectangular plank top that doubled as a prep surface and breadboard shaped slides that open to reveal storage space below for pots and pans, kitchen utensils, or dish cloths, this provincial pantry table would have been found in a small farm house where it doubled as a work table. Raised on straight carved legs and stabilized by an H-stretcher. A practical table for smaller spaces, with a wonderful aged patina that's finished on all sides so that it can float in the room. Also perfect as a console or sofa table.
