19th Century French Louis Philippe Period Walnut Commode with Bookmatched Front and Marble Top
A four-drawer 19th century French Louis Philippe period commode handcrafted in walnut by talented artisans near Rennes in the Brittany region, circa 1840s. Having a bookmatched burled walnut front, this handsome commode features its original Saint Anne marble top above a doucine drawer with three full length drawers below. The four drawers each have a center brass escutcheon that identifies the keyhole with a pair of circular brass pulls on the three lower drawers. Raised on a plinth base with bracket feet. The scale of the drawers ensures an ample amount of storage wherever this chest is placed.
Louis Philippe style is refined, linear, and restrained. The strong, bold lines of Louis Philippe pieces emphasize the geometric quality of the style created during the reign of King Louis Philippe (1830-1848), making commodes like this easily fit into an existing home. It mixes flawlessly with other periods and styles.
