A large 19th century French terracotta tian bowl complete with both handles and pouring spout having an unglazed exterior and a beautiful mustard yellow glaze to the interior and lip, circa 1870s. Earthernware tian bowls like this are considered utilitarian mixing bowls and were originally made in Narbonne, France near the Spanish border. Wide at the mouth and narrow at the base, they would traditionally be used in the preparation of popular French dishes such as cassoulet or confit du canard, but the French also used them to wash dishes in and as a vessel to collect milk for making cheese. Today, tian bowls are used to display fruit, vegetables, or flowers. They also make a lovely vessel sink. We have a large selection of antique French tian bowls and French pottery.
