18th Century Louis XV-Louis XVI Transition Period Desk with Tooled Leather Top
Provincial 18th Century Louis XV-Louis XVI Transition period bureau plat or writing desk constructed during the French Transition period (1750-1775) by talented craftsmen in Normandy of old growth French oak with pine as a secondary wood during the French. This handsome desk has an oak top with canted edges and the original brown tooled leather writing surface. The shaped, carved pine frieze with two drawers features Louis XV inspired elements, in contrast to the tapered, fluted legs that support it. The fresh French polish allows the aged patina to shine and works with traditional or modern decor. Finished on all sides so that it can float in any room.Â
Most Transition period pieces were created outside Paris by Provincial cabinet makers and combined design elements used during Louis XV's reign (1723-1774) with Louis XVI (1774-1792) motifs in the same piece. When Louis XVI assumed the throne in 1774 after his father's death, Rococo tendencies and Baroque excess were no longer popular. A movement was underway that favored the clean, straight lines of the neoclassical style.
