19TH CENTURY FRENCH ST. HUBERT
BUFFET DE CHASSE OR HUNTING VAISSELIER $7,295.00
Item # LFALO1538
A stunning example of Rennaisance style furniture, this mid-19th century French St. Hubert buffet de chasse or hunting vaisselier is richly and intricately carved with motifs of animals of the hunt, fruit, nuts and vines. Buffet de chasse were found in French hunting lodges and were used to present game after the hunt. Various forms of the hunt were depicted in the furniture, tapestries and paintings over the centuries. The hunt was considered to be a pastime of royalty and the privileged class.
At the uppermost center and resting upon the top shelf of this solid oak piece, there is a cartouche with a hand-carved boar's head. There are two shelves beneath for display purposes. The shelves are held up by two sets of beautifully ornamented c-scrolls ending in volutes typical of St. Hubert vaisseliers. On the bottom shelf and resting on the curve of the volutes are clusters of grapes and ripe fruit. There are two drawers with grapevine motifs for handles. The lower buffet's two doors feature bas relief carvings of fish and a grouse. The two meticulously detailed fish, hanging from a ribbon and surrounded by cattails and leaves, and the grouse, also hanging from a ribbon and surrounded by grapevines and grape leaves, were done by an expert ébéniste. The doors are flanked by decorated volutes with garlands of fruit and grape vines. The entire piece rests upon bun feet. Dimensions:
