19TH CENTURY FRENCH CAST IRON CLOCKWORK
ROTISSERIE SPIT JACK
Item # LFALO1815
An ornate 19th century French cast iron clockwork rotisserie, comprising a wind-up jack raised on four claw feet with brass handle, a winding key, cast iron tripod spit stand with 8 spit hooks, and a single steel spit.
The purpose of these antique spit jacks is to turn spits of roasting meat before a fire without the need of anyone doing it by hand. Spit jacks like this one turned a horizontal spit at hearth level, and when its bell rang, the cook would know it was time to rewind the spring. Diners could anticipate that their meat was "done to a turn."
