A fine Art Deco spelter animalier sculpture, naturalistically modeled and posed, of a twelve point stag and doe by French artist Louis Albert Carvin. The stag with his front legs raised on marble blocks and the whole mounted on a stunning rectangular black and gold marble stepped plinth base. Signed L. Carvin to right of base.
Louis-Albert Carvin (1875-1951) was an important Art Deco animalier sculptor during the Art Deco period. He formally studied at École des Beaux-Arts in France and spent a lifetime studying the form, style, and movement of animals associated with the Art Deco period. He was given France's Medal of Honor in 1894 and was a member of the Society of French Artists. Carvin’s work was frequently exhibited at the Salon des Artists. His animal sculptures are highly regarded and sought after.
