- Large 19th Century Greek Terracotta Pithari or Olive Oil Jar with Yellow Glaze
Large 19th Century Greek Terracotta Pithari or Olive Oil Jar with Yellow Glaze
A mid-19th century terracotta pithari or oil jar hand made by a Koroni potter in the Peloponnese region in southern Greece having a wonderful aged patina with traces of yellow glaze around the neck and lip, circa 1850s. This Greek oliveoil jar features a narrow neck and typical "orcio" cruse or circular, tapering ribbed body that's defined by rings of clay. Hundreds of years ago, before olive oil was processed, bottled and shipped for export, it was stored in jars like these. The high shoulder and short neck design helped to keep the oil fresh. Classic Greek jars like this are still used in Greek homes to store the family olive oil. A charming decorative accent standing alone or filled with plants. Please note that these jars were never intended for use as planters, so you will need to drill a drainage hole or have a custom liner made if you choose to use one as a planter.
