Pair of intricately carved Dagobert chairs made from solid walnut during the Renaissance Revival period. Circa 1870s. Each chair having a curule form seat surmounted with a horizontal backsplat with carved acanthus leaves, mounted with a cartouche flanked by grotesque masques ending in volute carved acanthus armrests on each side. Supported by a sturdy X-shaped pediment with H-shaped stretcher for stability.
The most notable example of this type of chair is the alleged chair of King Dagobert I (603-639 AD), now in the Louvre. It is thought to be the oldest existing example of European furniture. The chair is of cast bronze and partially gilt. It was made originally on the principle of the Egyptian X-shaped stool. Dimensions:
