A fabulous 19th century Country French etabli or carpenter's workbench hand constructed in the Rhone Valley, having a chestnut top that is almost five inches thick, oak legs, and a bottom shelf finished with pine boards. Workbenches like this were common in country homes in France. Because farmers were not able to work in the fields during the cold winter months, they would often make furniture for their own homes or families. The surface of this rustic carpenter's workbench has tool holes built into the thick wood slab top, various and sundry tool marks from the many projects completed over decades of use, and a great patina. It features the original steel vise, two drawers, a recessed tray for holding a craftsman's tools and implements, and traditional tenon and mortise construction. Whether used as a console, sofa table, or bar, this sturdy workbench will withstand everyday use with ease and is sure to be a focal point.
